The age of AI demands not just developers, testers, or business analysts but also independent consultants
Just software engineers or just consultants? You graduate as a Software Engineer(SE) but then choose to specialize in a particular technology, e.g., Salesforce CRM or ASP.NET. Every 'Software Engineering' book talks about software versions and new releases. As a SE, we need to stay ahead of these releases because this is our bread and butter. Hell, yes! But who are consultants?
- 1. A consultant not only keeps track of updates but also suggests these updates to clients to add value to their projects.
- 2. Instead of waiting for your senior to tell you what to do, a consultant comes up with design suggestions after a client call for the requirements at hand. You are not a zombie ๐งโโ๏ธ ๐งโโ๏ธ blindly following instructions; you reason through your actions.
- 3. When you fall sick and go to your GP, just hearing them say "you will be fine" can make you feel 70% healed without even taking medicine. Similarly, a consultant needs to inspire confidence in clients, assuring them that everything will be alright and smooth.
- 4. Having a strong phone personality is crucial, even more than having your camera open during a call.
- 5. Simple etiquette like starting a call with a greeting, discussing work, cracking a joke may be, and saying goodbye goes a long way.
The idea of being a consultant remains relevant to every professional, regardless of the field they belong to.
"There is nothing new under the sun" - King Solomon
For Salesforce professionals, the idea of consultancy is intrinsic. It has always been about being a consultant from day one, not just a software engineer.
